Plastic surgery is a medical specialty, which through surgery, reconstructs deformities and corrects functional deficiencies, through the transformation of the human body. The word "plastic" originates from the Greek "Plastik" meaning shape or transform. Through this transformation, the patient who was born with a congenital defect or has suffered an accident which made him lose function, is able to reach normalcy in appearance as well as function of his body. By reshaping bodies to make them more beautiful, it also gives an aesthetic improvement.

Plastic Surgery has been divided, from a practical standpoint, into two fields of action.

• Reconstructive Surgery or repairs, including microsurgery, which focuses on concealing and rebuilding the destructive effects of an accident or trauma. Reconstructive surgery uses osteosynthesis techniques, moving through tissue flaps and autologous transplants of healthy body parts to those affected.
• Esthetic Surgery (or cosmetics) is done in order to change those body parts that are not satisfactory to the patient. In many cases, however, there are medical reasons (for example, when there is Reduction of the breast due to orthopedic problems in the lumbar spine, or in serious cases of Blepharoplasty in severe cases of Blefarochalasis that even impede vision).
 
This division has been marked by society, and Public and Private health services (insurance companies) because health services only cover the costs of Plastic Surgery linked to congenital and acquired diseases and accidents. But they do not cover the costs of Plastic Surgery associated with improved aesthetics of the person.

Reconstructive plastic surgery

Reconstructive Plastic Surgery is performed to correct functional impairments caused by:

• burns
• traumatic injuries, such as facial bone fractures
• congenital abnormalities, such as cleft lip, or cleft palate
• developmental abnormalities
• infection or disease
• removal of cancers or tumors, such as a mastectomy for a breast cancer, a head and neck cancer and a abdominal invasion by a colon cancer

Reconstructive plastic surgery is usually performed to improve function, but it may be done to approximate a normal appearance. It is generally covered by insurance coverage but this may change according to the procedure required.
